Wisconsin state fair

Amongst the cotton candy trucks and the funnel cake stands, the Sheep Dairy Association of Wisconsin brings sheep milk cheese to the Wisconsin State Fair! At one of our busiest events so far, we love being able to meet you, chat about our organization and our members. One of our favorite questions to answer at this event is how the milk our members collect from their sheep on their farms ends up in our local grocery stores! It all starts with our local Wisconsin producers such as Maple Hill Farm, Full Fleeced Diary, Ms. J and Co, and other farmers in our association that raise a variety of breeds of sheep which they milk throughout the year. Then, the milk they collect is stored until transportation trucks come to pick it up and transport it to a processor such as Carr Valley Cheese, Cedar Grove Cheese, and Hook’s cheese (amongst other processors in our association). At the processing facility, cheesemakers work to create a variety of remarkably creamy and flavorful cheeses. Finally, their cheeses are transported to be sold at their local stores, retailers, or at events such as farmers markets. There are exceptions to this process such as farmstead Hidden Springs Creamery, who milk their sheep and make their cheese all on the same farm. We hope to continue to meet and greet you at these events and provide the inside scoop on how our unique sheep dairy industry works and introduce you to the hard-working members of our association that make it all possible!
